Entering its 13th year, the annual event will present nearly 100 films from around the globe on Oct. 5-9. In-person screenings will be followed by a virtual festival Oct. 9-16, opening the competing films to a nationwide audience.
.
“We are honored to be celebrating talented documentary filmmakers and the remarkable stories they have created in person and online this year,” said executive director Mary Ann Ponce in a press release. She launched the event back in 2010 as a tribute to her late son, David, an aspiring filmmaker, who lost his battle with cancer at the age of 20 four years earlier.
Screenings and related programming will be held at five venues each within walking distance of the village’s idyllic downtown: the Chagrin Valley Little Theatre, Chagrin Falls Intermediate School Theater, the United Methodist Church of Chagrin Falls, South Franklin Circle and Riverside Park. Historic Township Hall once again serves as the epicenter of the event.
The festival kicks off Oct. 6 with an opening night gala accompanied by a screening of “The Killing of Sister Dorothy, In Her Own Words.” The film, by brothers Jack, Andrew and Matthew Arehart of Medina, examines the murders of Cleveland nun Dorothy Kazel and three fellow missionaries in El Salvador in 1980.
This year’s lineup of 91 films was curated from a list of more than 600 submissions from 55 countries. Of those, 39 will have either their regional, Ohio, U.S. or world premiere at the festival. To help moviegoers navigate the offerings, the films are divided into nine categories: Emerging filmmakers, Human Spirit Documentaries, International Documentaries, U.S. Documentaries, Ohio Focus, Spotlight Documentaries, Local Documentaries, Student Documentaries and Short Documentaries.
