▪️He gambled away $60million ▪️Drank Diet Coke on the fairways ▪️And he loved a cigarette John Daly is a golfing icon
John Daly is the chain-smoking two-time golf major winner who gambled away $60MILLION and left Tiger Woods shocked with his Diet Coke habit“I don’t think I’ve ever stepped in the gym – they won’t let me smoke there.”
The fact he even won a major in the first place defied the odds hugely, as he burst onto the scene in 1991 to win the PGA Championship. He went from an unknown rookie to a superstar overnight and picked up $230,000 in prize money – a handsome sum for someone who came from such humble beginnings. But without fanfare, he wrote a cheque for $30,000 to the family of a man who was killed at the course that week after being struck by lightning. It is gestures like that that elevated him to legendary status.
Winning two-majors put him on the same footing as the likes of Greg Norman and Sandy Lyle, but his later career was dogged by wild inconsistency. Amateur golfers out there will know his pain.He once hit six golf balls into the water at the 1998 Bay Hill Invitational in a final round meltdown. The 56-year-old has previously opened up on his struggles with alcohol being down to his abusive father.
Daly has always been seen as an outsider in the golf world and he embraces that status. One of his many hilarious traditions includes selling merchandise at the Hooters restaurant outside The Masters in Augusta every year since 1997.as a previous winner and he will be sure to draw a big crowd.
