Champion jockey Glen Boss has called for a schedule shake-up to two of the biggest horse races in Australia. 7NEWS
The call has been backed by former Australian cricketer and media commentator Simon O’Donnell.
O’Donnell, who works on radio station SEN and is a racing enthusiast and owner, said the Cox Plate would be the perfect race to held at night.a push to make it the last race of the Spring CarnivalThe new plan is for the Cox Plate to become the “grand final” of the carnival, boost its prize money, and be held two weeks after the Melbourne Cup.
Part of the proposed changes will include a $3 million cash injection to make it an $8 million purse, putting it on par with the Melbourne Cup.While no decisions have been reached, it has been reported that Racing Victoria has recently been holding several ‘high-level” meetings about changes to the Spring Carnival.
But Moonee Valley CEO Michael Browell has previously said that there was only a 50 per cent chance of any change to the Cox Plate. The Cox Plate is currently planned for Saturday, October 28, this year, the same date as the first ever Cox Plate back in 1922.
