A ban on preferential bookings in a bid to ensure a fairer and more reliable access taxi system will come into effect next week.
Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis says the reforms aim to fix what is currently a "broken" system.A ban on preferential bookings in a bid to ensure a fairer and more reliable access taxi system is set to come into effect next week.
Oliver, who uses a mobility aid, could not get an access taxi to travel to a medical appointment earlier this week.Mr Koutsantonis says from May 19, passengers will no longer be able to request specific drivers during dedicated hours."I've had letters from people who missed their husband's funeral because an access cab just didn't show — it's got to stop."
But the government said about 60 per cent of operators had allegedly "attempted to falsely claim" a lifting fee for "jobs they did not complete". He said that request would need to be made in writing to the department's access taxi transport team. "The minister is clearly trying to reduce the number of access cabs that are committed to privately arranged 'preference' jobs during peak times to maximise the proportion of the 100 access cabs in the fleet that are available in specified hours," he said.
