Significant changes to Queensland’s environment laws have been accepted by the Palaszczuk government, triggered by 4600 complaints of putrid smells from waste dumps near Swanbank in Ipswich.

Resident from suburbs ringing waste dumps at Ipswich have for more than a decade complained about horrible smells, similar to faecal matter, from the dumps preventing sleep, causing headaches and breathing difficulties.

“A not-insignificant number of the complaints referred to a number of consequences, including adverse impact on sleep, coughing, breathing difficulties, and headaches.”The report recommends changing the charge of “serious environmental harm”, so it includes “low level environmental nuisance” evidenced by people “vomiting, or retching” because of the smell.

New Environment Minister Leanne Linard said the review – triggered by the complaints – showed residents wanted companies to clean up their acts. Some Ipswich homes at Collingwood Park are now less than 700 metres from dump sites in Ipswich, as residents continue to call for tighter environmental controls on dump companies.
