A man has been shot dead in Sydney with the incident sparking a major police operation. 7NEWS

7NEWS understands the man was 48-year-old Alen Moradian.Police say they believe the shooting is the latest in a spate of gangland killings in Sydney and that the victim was known to police as a ‘major player’ in organised crime.Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty told reporters police believe the attack was “a targeted shooting”.

“The shooting this morning bears all the marks of an organised crime murder and is being treated as that,” he said. “We’re focusing our attention on obtaining CCTV and witnesses and are appealing to anyone who may have seen or heard something not just at the time of the shooting but in the days leading up to it as well.”“He has an extensive criminal history and is well known to police,” he said.Meanwhile, road closures remain in place, near the busy Westfield shopping complex, and motorists are urged to avoid the area.
