US troops fired shots into the air and all commercial flights were cancelled at Kabul airport, as thousands of Afghans attempted to catch any flight out of the country after the Taliban takeover.
State Department spokesman Ned Price said late Sunday in a statement"the safe evacuation of all Embassy personnel is now complete."
The joint statement added the United States"will be transferring out of the country thousands of American citizens" and others, and added the government would"accelerate the evacuation of thousands of Afghans eligible for US Special Immigrant Visas."Meanwhile, the UN has called on the Taliban to exercise restraint, and particularly to protect the rights of women and girls
Conflict in Afghanistan is forcing hundreds of thousands to flee amid reports of serious human rights violations.International humanitarian law and human rights, especially the hard-won gains of women and girls, must be preserved.He was"particularly concerned about the future of women and girls, whose hard-won rights must be protected," the statement added.The United Nations Security Council will hold a meeting on Monday on Afghanistan.
