Coach Brandon Staley says Herbert “was able to do some light throwing” Tuesday, but the quarterback is still uncertain to play Sunday against Jacksonville.
COSTA MESA — Austin Ekeler feels Justin Herbert’s pain. Ekeler suffered an injured rib during the Chargers’ season-opening game in 2018, and he recalled Wednesday that it took pain-killing injections and additional protective padding around his torso to get back on the field and be a full participant.
“I remember getting out of bed, it was like, ‘Oh God,’” Ekeler said, groaning for emphasis. “It’s painful. I mean, it’s kind of like what you would expect. It’s already painful, so you’re just protecting it. You’re overprotective of that side. It’s like there’s a sensitivity on that side.”when he was hit after making a fourth-quarter throw in the Chargers’ loss last Thursday to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Herbert didn’t attempt a pass during the portion of practice that reporters witnessed, but he did participate in a drill in which he handed off to running backs, including Ekeler, during the opening session of individual drills. Chase Daniel and Easton Stick did all of the throwing.
