A former police officer who snapped a photograph of AFL identity Dani Laidley inside a police station has had criminal charges dismissed after successfully arguing he had no case to answer.as the former North Melbourne coach and player was being interviewed by two officers inside St Kilda police station following her arrest for stalking. Laidley was wearing a wig and make-up at the time.
Reid and two other officers were charged after the photo he took and a mugshot of Laidley entered the public domain. Reid, who is no longer a police officer, did not take the mugshot photo. Prosecutors argued Reid was required to adhere to the Victoria Police code of conduct and manual, and that any breach of those rules constituted a criminal offence.
Bate agreed, saying she was bound by past legal rulings involving police officers, and found Reid’s conduct was a disciplinary breach, not a crime.
