A 45-year-old man has been charged by police and faces a maximum penalty of ten years in prison after disrupting a flight from Sydney to Malaysia.
The 45-year-old Canberra man allegedly became disruptive on the flight which left Sydney just after 1pm on Monday afternoon, with a backpack strapped to his stomach and allegedly claiming to have an explosive onboard.
Footage of the incident also showed him telling passengers he was a"slave of Allah" and demanding a flight attendant to say they were too. The MH122 flight, holding 199 passengers and 12 crew onboard returned to Sydney about 3.45pm before the man was later arrested.He was charged early on Tuesday morning with one count of false statement about threat to damage a Division 3 aircraft, contrary to section 24 of the Crimes Act 1991; and one count of passenger not comply with cabin crew's safety instruction contrary to section 91.580 of the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations 1998.
The man is now facing a maximum penalty of ten years' imprisonment and a fine of more than $15,000, respectively.
