Age Scotland has hit out at the closure of Lanarkshire Royal Bank of Scotland branches.

Age Scotland has claimed that Lanarkshire communities have been left ‘abandoned’ after the Royal Bank of Scotland announced it was shutting four local branches in the region.

The free download features the latest breaking news and exclusive stories, and allows you to customise your page to the sections that matter most to you.Age Scotland’s chief executive Katherine Crawford said: “This latest in a long line of bank branch closures represents another step towards the wholesale abandonment of high streets and communities across Scotland.

“The digital route is wholly unsatisfactory for 31 per cent of over-65s in the country who feel uncomfortable with the idea of online banking due to a fear of fraud, lack of trust in online banking services and lack of necessary IT skills. These are all legitimate concerns which must be taken into account by banks when considering the needs of their customers.

However, the decision is final and the Rutherglen branch will close on September 24, whilst its East Kilbride counterpart will shut its doors on October 1.
