King Charles will formally be announced as the new monarch later today in a traditional ceremony. The Accession Council will meet in St James’ Palace before a proclamation is read from a balcony by a courtier, publicly declaring him King.
A full coronation ceremony is unlikely to happen until next summer as they are traditionally spaced out to allow an appropriate mourning period for the late monarch.
Only 200 of the 700 or so members will be summoned because of restrictions on space and ex-prime ministers and ministers are likely to be among those in attendance. That will trigger a flurry of similar readings around the country, with the second one at City of London at the Royal Exchange at midday on Saturday, and further Proclamations in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales at midday on Sunday.
Flags are being flown at half-mast across the country but will return to full-mast for 24 hours after the council to mark the start of a new reign.
