Charlie McCartin, the brother of former No.1 draft pick Paddy and current Sydney defender Tom, has suddenly become an AFL draft smokey. After working as a part-time scout for Sydney’s off-field team, Charlie, 25, has made an eye-catching return to local football – seven years in the making.

Charlie is playing for Lorne in the Colac and District Football League and 7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary says his red-hot form has prompted “further assessment from AFL clubs”. Cleary said it started as a return to playing socially with friends in the coastal town the McCartins frequent on summer holidays, and now it “could end in a draft fairytale”. “From recruiter to potential recruitee,” Cleary said.
