Europe correspondent reports from the ground in Larnaca where evacuation effort are underway to assist Australians in leaving war-torn Beirut.
A charter flight carrying 229 Australians citizens, permanent residents, and their family members fleeing war-torn Beirut has landed in Cyprus.
The federal government has two charter flights carrying up to 500 passengers which make the 40 minute trip to Cyprus from Beirut on Saturday. There are almost 5000 Australians in Lebanon registered with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, with 3,088 registered as wanting to depart, and 1,813 registered for information only.The first Qantas flight is scheduled to leave Cyprus on Monday night local time, arriving in Sydney on Tuesday.Advertisement
