movies saved them, chief among them devoted teenage girls who swore allegiance to Team Edward or Team Jacob . But Chaske Spencer might have the biggest claim. The actor was feeling a little lost in Hollywood – Native American roles were getting harder to find at the time, he recalls – when the part of werewolf Sam Uley was recast in the later
instalments of the blockbuster series. Spencer auditioned. “I was ready to give up because there was nothing going on,” he recalls, promising himself that if he didn’t win the role, he would leave the industry for good. The YA gods were on his side: Spencer got the job., doors started opening,” Spencer says on a Zoom call from Georgia, “I always say it’s every ten years in my life, with my career, something always happens.
But he knew that he couldn’t shoulder “the whole Native American experience” either, so he pulled on some more modern references, too. “I wanted to play him as a vet,” he says. Spencer grew up in a “salt of the earth” towns in Idaho and Montana, and a lot of his dad’s friends fought in Vietnam, and Spencer’s own friends went to fight in Afghanistan, which was a useful starting point. Another influence?“I made him a Native American Vietnam vet biker.
We do actually find out what happens to Cornelia. Over a decade later, she is in England, still wrapped up in thought about her Western adventure, though manages to find some closure. Spencer believes that Eli, finally finding peace, would have settled down too. Perhaps he built himself some land, found somewhere to farm, got a dog. “He sits on his porch, longing for Cornelia,” Spencer, clearly a romantic, speculates. “Or maybe he has someone in his life.
