Exquisite new pinot noirs from Tasmania and Burgundy reveal the best of both worlds.
Five years ago, bushfires changed the course of Jim and Daisy Chatto’s wine business – for the better, as it turned out.
Chatto, a mainlander, first moved to Tasmania in 1998 to work at a winery in the Tamar Valley near Launceston. Just a few days into his new job, he met Daisy and the pair fell in love. They moved to the Hunter Valley in NSW in 2000 and became ensconced in the wine community there, with Jim becoming chief winemaker at Mount Pleasant. But the long-term plan was always to one day make pinot noir in Tasmania from their own vineyard.
“We didn’t have a lot to do after vintage because we didn’t have our usual amount of grapes,” says Chatto. “So we decided to take the kids and go and live in Burgundy for a few months.”“Initially, I just offered to help Jane out during vintage,” says Chatto. “I told her I didn’t need to be paid; I was just keen to get the experience. But before we’d left for France, Daisy had suggested I should try to make some wine while I was there.
