NASA plans to intentionally smash a spacecraft into a distant asteroid with the goal of changing the space rock’s orbit

NASA says it knows of no asteroids that pose a threat to Earth within the next century. But testing planetary defense technologies has become an agency priority. Its upcoming Double Asteroid Redirection Test, or DART, is the first mission of its type.On Monday, the DART spacecraft will slam into a distant asteroid known as Dimorphos at more than 14,000 miles an hour to try to change Dimorphos’ orbit. The asteroid poses no threat to Earth.
