Typhoon Chedeng continued to move north of the country while strengthening the Southwest Monsoon that affects parts of Luzon and Visayas, PAGASA said on Saturday evening.

Chedeng, however, is expected to weaken due to an "increasingly unfavorable environment," the state weather bureau said.

''It is likely to be downgraded into a severe tropical storm within the next 36 hours,'' PAGASA said in its 11 p.m. bulletin. ''Chedeng is unlikely to directly bring heavy rainfall over the country in the next three days. However, the Southwest Monsoon enhanced by Chedeng will bring occasional monsoon rains over the western portions of Luzon and Visayas in the next three days,'' it added.

At 10 p.m., Chedeng was located 910 kilometers east of extreme northern Luzon, carrying maximum sustained winds of 140 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 170 km/h. PAGASA said Chedeng may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Sunday evening or early Monday morning. —
