At least a dozen people have become sick, with seven taken to hospital, after concerns they were exposed to an unknown “toxic substance” at a Brisbane birthday party. About 64 people were said to have attended the party in Norman Park when a “large number” of guests began feeling unwell, and required medical attention about 2.45pm on Sunday.

The seventh patient was taken to Prince Charles Hospital about 12am after returning home from the party before becoming unwell. Police said that party guests had brought food from across Brisbane, and held concerns there may have been a “food poisoning incident or similar”. However, emergency services were also alerted to the possibility the party guests had been exposed to “toxic substances” related to pest control work done at the property.
