This stance contrasts with many automakers, including Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen, which initially pledged to transition entirely to EVs by specific dates but have since adjusted their timelines due to slower-than-anticipated EV adoption and market uncertainties. Ford, among others, has also reported substantial financial losses in its EV development efforts. Peter Matkin, chief engineer of Chery International, stated that Chery is taking a similar approach to Toyota, the world's largest automaker by sales, by continuing to invest in ICE development alongside its EV initiatives. Matkin emphasized Chery's commitment to enhancing ICE efficiency, particularly in the Chinese market, where the emphasis on New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), which includes plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), battery-electric vehicles (EVs), and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), is strong. Chery is developing a new turbo internal combustion engine featuring an Atkinson cycle, aiming for nearly 45% efficiency, which would be among the best in its class. This strategy represents a divergence from some traditional OEMs and underscores Chery's willingness to take risks. \In Australia, Chery's offerings encompass a variety of powertrains, including petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric options. The company plans to launch a dual-cab ute in Australia later this year, internally coded as 'KP31', which will compete with the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux. Notably, this ute will feature a segment-first diesel plug-in hybrid, marking Chery's first diesel engine offering in Australia. This multi-pathway approach is also mirrored by other brands. GWM is significantly expanding its hybrid and plug-in hybrid lineup and plans to introduce a new 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine in its Tank 500 SUV, likely extending to its Cannon Alpha dual-cab ute in 2026. Toyota is also developing a new generation of internal combustion engines for future models, incorporating them into its 'multi-pathway' powertrain strategy across different markets. Chery's commitment to ICE technology is further underscored by its position as China's leading automotive exporter for the 23rd consecutive year, having shipped 1.4 million vehicles overseas in the previous year. Its primary export markets include Russia, Mexico, and South America, and the brand is also expanding in Europe, having opened its first vehicle assembly plant in Barcelona, Spain, in 2024. Recent regulatory changes in Europe, such as adjusting the zero-emissions mandate to allow 10% of ICE vehicles, also support the hybrid market, opening up opportunities for petrol and diesel engine options. In the Australian market, Chery currently offers the petrol Tiggo 4 small SUV, the petrol Chery C5, hybrid models across its SUV range, and the electric E5. \Mr. Matkin highlighted that there is substantial potential for further improving ICE efficiency. He noted that Chery's current engine efficiency is at 44.5%, which is world-class, but still leaves a considerable margin for improvement, with 55% of potential efficiency gains yet to be realized. He further explained that even incremental improvements in fuel economy, such as one or two percent, represent significant achievements and present engineering and technological challenges. This suggests that Chery is optimistic that it can further improve ICEs and continue to be competitive, even with the rise of electric vehicles. Chery's strategy is a testament to its understanding of the current market and future market needs and their commitment to providing different options to meet the needs of diverse markets and consumer preferences.
