A NSW Catholic high school will allow senior students to learn from home one day a week permanently following a trial that found the program helped students become more independent despite concerns about a lack of structure.
A NSW Catholic school will permanently move to a four-day face-to-face week as part of a new flexible teaching model.A Catholic high school in New South Wales will permanently adopt a flexible timetable that allows senior students to learn remotely one day a week following a year-long trial.
"We didn't land it as well as we could have and there is more work to be done when doing this moving forward," Chevalier College principal Greg Miller said. Lead researcher Phil Cummins said self-regulated learning can often seem "a bit boring" to younger students. Mr Miller said only a small number of parents were completely opposed to the school adopting flexibility full-time.
"There are more than enough people, students and parents, who are encouraging us moving forward to do it better and get it right," he said. Most of the students surveyed throughout the trial reported improvements in their organisation and self-regulation."Data gathered across the research period suggests that learning from home has been very successful for senior students who took up this choice," the report said.
"That's my advice to any other parent that they engage with the program and know what the school is really striving to do and how it affects their child."It is difficult to determine how many schools in Australia have adopted flexible arrangements as the data is not collected.
