For the first time in five years, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds return to the Chicago Air and Water Show. If you plan on attending, here's what you need to know.

The Thunderbirds, the U.S. Air Force demonstration team, are celebrating their 70th anniversary, flying since 1953.“It’s really exciting to have them come back,” Hickey said. “These military acts are one of the larger draws and what people ultimately come down to see.” Kevin Coleman, Edward Hamill, Triple Time Team, the Chicago Fire Department Air/Sea Rescue and the Chicago Police Department helicopter are other civilian acts.
“Everyone enjoys it. Everyone turns into little kids for the weekend,” she said. “It’s the largest air and water show that has free admission. It’s a great opportunity to bring your family to a free event. You can bring a picnic and a beach towel and lay on the beach and look up at the sky.”A plane leaves a ribbon in the sky during a previous Air and Water Show. This year’s show is Aug. 19-20.
“I don’t think we’ve ever actually officially canceled the show. I think we’ve been able to get in some component, even if it’s just a couple acts like we did last year. Just to make sure people out there can see something.” Of course, you can go to the Willis Tower’s Skydeck Chicago or the 360 Chicago Observation Deck, she said, which would also be a good option for views if the show is on.For a quick nosh, she recommends the Purple Pig or the Lux Café on Michigan Avenue or even the new Gordon Ramsey Burger, nearly on Ontario St.The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds return to the Chicago Air and Water Show for the first time since 2018.
