The Chinatown, Chicago Lunar New Year Parade kicked off near Wentworth and 24th Street with increased security after the Monterey Park shooting.
There is still plenty of excitement following their annual event, the community simultaneously celebrates the day and mourns the loss of those in California.
"Typically we would start the parade off with a big bang, but in light of the events of last week, it's appropriate to not do that. We don't want anybody to be nervous about gunfire or anything like that," said 11th Ward Alderwoman Nicole Lee.Lunar New Year celebrations still on in Chicago after Monterey Park mass shooting
"There's so much negativity in the world and it's always good to see some kind of positivity in this area, especially with a bunch of people coming out together to celebrate one thing," Brian Kim added.
