Nearly 40 years after state violence killed thousands in India, Chicago Sikhs reflect on how 1984 continues to their inform their identities.

“I think when you have people that are strongly committed and identify strongly with a certain faith that has such visible characteristics like Sikhism, there’s always going to be some sort of a backlash because it is different from the norm to some extent,” Aakre said.

“[Enthusiasm] is declining, I would say the new generation is not keeping up, or for some reason they are not connected, probably because of lack of awareness … That is a big disconnect we see right now,” he said. Mann, who grew up in Chicago and helped found the University of Illinois Chicago’s first Sikh Student Association in 2000, cited new forms of expression among younger generations of Sikhs, pointing to Canadian poet Rupi Kaur’s work and the music of the, as “expressing the sentiments of the Sikh community about 1984 through poetry, through songs, through art.”

Community members laugh after participating in a sack race during a sports day event, June 12, 2022, outside the Palatine gurdwara.
