Veteran Port Adelaide doctor Mark Fisher has stepped down as the club’s chief medical officer after 15 years in the role. Fisher has not left the AFL club though, remaining as the Power’s second doctor. It comes after a period of scrutiny on Fisher, who has made some questionable decisions in the past two years. Last year, Port were fined $100,000 for breaching concussion protocols following a sickening friendly-fire hit between teammates Aliir Aliir and Lachie Jones.
Two days later, the club confirmed he was suffering from a concussion, meaning he missed out on the following week’s preliminary final. In 2016, Port Adelaide were fined $20,000 for failing to follow regulations when assessing former player Hamish Hartlett, who had just copped a head knock. Hartlett passed tests on the sidelines, but was sent back out before the then mandated 15-minute exclusion period, which existed to allow club doctors to fully assess vision of the incident.
