Between eight and 10 tonnes of rotting fish has been buried in Menindee, but live fish are still gasping on the surface of the oxygen-depleted Darling-Baaka River.

NSW’s chief scientist Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte will likely lead an inquiry into why a mass fish kill in Menindee, 20 times larger than 2019’s catastrophe, struck the Darling-Baaka River this month.

“I don’t have any interest in retribution or holding people to account for previous decisions. All that matters to me is the future and making sure that we get the policies right and in place to make a difference to the ecology of this river and to the people that live on it.” It’s believed the river’s oxygen levels plunged after receding flood water crammed booming bony herring populations and algae into a smaller body of water.

“I remember being on the banks of this waterway around four years ago and seeing the effects of the opposite of these environmental conditions,” he said.
