The change won't come into effect until April 1 but already childcare providers are feeling pressure to conform to the new program.

What Kessel wants is for more childcare centres to be built, and for early childcare educators to have better pay and greater access to training, because right now, the prospect of childcare in the province looks like long wait lists, and a dwindling labour pool.

As of April 1 of this year, fees for a child under the age of six attending a full-time regulated childcare provider in Saskatchewan will be capped at $10 per day. The program does not cover part-time children attending childcare, which makes it difficult and costly for childcare providers to offer that service.

“To be able to increase the number of spaces was going to take the bulk of the work. And if we would have tackled that before the affordability side of this, we definitely would have left money on the table,” said Duncan. “It’s going to take time.”
