Former high commissioner to the UK George Brandis is heading back to Australia for an academic appointment at Australian National University.

China and climate change are the two greatest existential threats to Australia’s national security, both of which will require sensitive diplomatic interventions with the Asia Pacific region, says former attorney-general George Brandis.

A report last year by the US National Intelligence Council warned of a growing risk of conflicts over water and migration, and more food insecurity, by 2040 because of climate change. The report labelled island nations near Australia in the Pacific as among the most highly vulnerable. He declined to comment on the thawing of relations between Australia and China under the new Albanese government. Early this month, Defence Minister, in Singapore, the first time a meeting of peers, or even a conversation, between the two countries had taken place in more than two years.
