The Chinese military has taken swift action following the controversial meeting of Taiwan’s leader Tsai Ing-wen and United States House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
"Their presence and unwavering support reassure the people of Taiwan that we are not isolated and we are not alone," she told media after the talks on Wednesday.Taiwan's leader met with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California on Wednesday. Mario Tama/Getty Images/AFP
Ms Tsai’s visit to California is part of a weeklong trip across North and South America to shore up support from Taiwan’s dwindling allies in the region. China has also made a strong symbolic response to Tsai’s trip to the United States by inviting President Tsai's predecessor Ma Ying-Jeou to tour the mainland.
Mr Ma is currently embarking on an unprecedented 12-day tour across the country and visited his ancestral home in central Chongqing on Tuesday. The former leader’s trip to China is the first time a former president of Taiwan has ever been invited to the People's Republic of China since its founding in 1949.
