Rio Tinto’s next chairman is the Canadian diplomat who this year secured the freedom of two Canadian businessmen accused of espionage by Chinese authorities.
The appointment comes barely three months after Mr Barton, in his role as Canadian ambassador to China, secured the passage to freedom of two Canadian businessmen accused by Chinese authorities of espionage.
“He worked tirelessly on this important task. He offered support and counsel to the two Michaels’ families, and he worked to forge a coalition of like-minded countries to stand in solidarity. Thanks to Dominic’s leadership and skilled diplomatic approach, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor are back at home with their families.
“I look forward to working with Jakob and the board to implement a strategy that puts decarbonisation at the heart of the business and positions Rio Tinto to be a leader in addressing complex global problems, while building and sustaining trust with host communities,” said Mr Barton in a statement. While Australian iron ore dominates Rio’s earnings today, the company’s most important growth project is the troubled Oyu Tolgoi copper project in Mongolia’s South Gobi Desert.
