Speculation continues that US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will visit Taiwan. Beijing has made it clear it would view this as a provocative act.
| US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has kicked off an Indo-Pacific tour that China has repeatedly warned could have serious consequences, with the possibility thatOn Sunday while en route from Hawaii, Ms Pelosi released a statement saying the trip would focus on “mutual security, economic partnership and democratic governance”, and take in Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan.
China has repeatedly flown warplanes into what Taiwan regards as its air defence zone, and there are fears Beijing could try to declare a no-fly zone in the area should the congressional tour attempt to enter. On Saturday night, China’s army was firing live artillery off the coast of Taiwan as it wrapped up four days of military exercises in the area. The US also maintains a strong presence in the contested waters of the South China Sea.
“The timing is unfortunate. Both sides are boxed in by domestic politics,” said Euan Graham, senior fellow for Asia-Pacific Security at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Singapore.
