The government is under pressure to confront Beijing after its main counterintelligence agency named a hacking group linked to China’s Ministry of State Security.

The Albanese government is under pressure to confront Beijing over accusations of cyber espionage, after its main counterintelligence agency for the first time publicly named a hacking group linked to China’s Ministry of State Security for sustained attacks on Australian networks.

The new announcement is the first time Australia has publicised the activities of APT40. Known for its work in state-sponsored cyber espionage, the group exploits compromised or ageing IT devices to breach defences.Australia’s allies in the so-called Five Eyes countries – the US, UK, New Zealand and Canada – as well as Germany, South Korea and Japan joined the Australian statement on Tuesday.

The ABC reported Home Affairs Department boss Stephanie Foster ordered an audit of all internet-connected devices in federal government agencies, and required officials to share any threat information with ASD. “The Albanese government is increasing Australia’s diplomatic, economic and defence engagement with Japan and Korea, as well as with South-East Asia, with India, with the Quad and through AUKUS.

But Justin Bassi, executive director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, said the government should be more direct about linking the Chinese government to hacking.
