Chinese state media has praised Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for pursuing “strategic autonomy”, claiming the United States and its allies should learn from Australia 's approach to trade relations.
The state-controlled outlet referred to the incoming Trump administration as “retrogressive” in its foreign policy and urged its allies to begin “recalibrating bilateral relations” and start “repositioning themselves on the “global stage”. “Australia, however, might offer some useful reference for those struggling to strike such a balance,” China Daily’s editorial staff wrote.
The CCP-owned masthead also referred to Mr Albanese’s interview with the ABC on Wednesday, in which he said he told Trump in a phone call it was in Washington’s interest to “trade fairly” with its allies and for Australia to “engage with China as our major source of trade”. China Daily said both countries should “follow the trend of the times” and “proceed from the common interests” required of a bilateral relationship, including Canberra and Beijing dealing with each other “on an equal footing”.
