ASPI’s Michael Shoebridge says China’s ambition is “enormous” as it attempts to “wield influence” across the Pacific – by offering security and trade deals with multiple Pacific Islands.
It comes after China scales up its efforts to gain a strategic foothold in the Pacific seeking a deal with 10 Pacific nations – include offering police, security, and cyber-support, paired with a new free trade agreement.
“The scale and speed of Beijing’s ambition to really wield influence and have security presence in the South-Pacific is enormous,” Mr Shoebridge told Sky News Australia.
