China's top trade official has invited U.S. negotiators to take part in a fresh round of face-to-face talks, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The report comes shortly after U.S. legislation on Hong Kong had threatened to derail trade discussions between the world's two largest economies.

The U.S. and China have imposed tariffs on billions of dollars' worth of one another's goods since the start of 2018, battering financial markets and souring business and consumer sentiment.
