Foreign Minister Penny Wong was told by her Chinese counterpart to treat Beijing as a partner rather than a threat if Australia - as China pointed to ex-prime minister Scott Morrison as the 'root cause' of the breakdown.
Beijing has blamed the former Morrison government's"irresponsible" words and actions for the relationship breakdown between China and Australia.on Friday where they spoke"frankly" about one another's priorities and concerns.

Picture: Asanka Ratnayake/Getty Images Beijing slapped sanctions on a number of products, which included barley, beef, wine and also issued a list of 14 grievances it had with Canberra in the past two years.
"Firstly, Australia must treat China as a partner, not an adversary," Mr Wang told Ms Wong, according to the ministry's statement. "China hopes that Australia will seize the current opportunity, take concrete actions, reshape a correct perception of Australia, and reduce negative assets and accumulate positive energy for improving China-Australia relations,” the statement read.
The pair also spoke about China's growing influence in the Pacific region that lead to the the signing of a security deal between Beijing and the Solomon Islands.
