Despite the meeting between China and Australia’s foreign ministers in Bali, the Labor government will largely continue the approach of the Morrison government towards China - minus the more excitable rhetoric.
after China was enraged by Australia’s foreign interference legislation and Malcolm Turnbull’s choice of language about it in late 2017.
The Morrison government’s resolve about that issue fed into a larger cycle of worsening tensions between China and the US and allies –While then foreign minister Marise Payne was clumsy in pushing this in a rare TV interview, China’s behaviour has largely quelled complaints by business leaders and Labor premiers that Canberra was foolishly provoking our largest trading partner.
Penny Wong’s tone may be calmer than Peter Dutton’s, more consistent than her usually invisible predecessor. She and Albanese will be more attuned to the need to soothe resentments from Australia’s neighbours and to emphasise respect for smaller power diplomacy and differences. But Albanese will still lead what is largely a continuation rather than a reversal or major adjustment of the Morrison government’s approach towards China.
