China has marked the one-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine with a sensational plea to end the conflict through peace negotiations while targeting countries like Australia for implementing crippling sanctions on Russia.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry issued the wide-ranging decree on Friday to mark the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“The sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all countries must be effectively upheld. All countries, big or small, strong or weak, rich or poor, are equal members of the international community.” On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was confident of a victory in the conflict which has already claimed more than 14,000 deaths on both sides.

In its paper on the end of the war, China addressed the issue of further militarisation and called for Russia to wind back any planned nuclear mobilisation.“The threat or use of nuclear weapons should be opposed. Nuclear proliferation must be prevented and nuclear crisis avoided.
