China shelves Pacific security pact after some nations object

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a flurry of meetings with top Pacific Island leaders in the 24 hours leading up to Monday’s summit.

China’s ambassador to Fiji, Qian Bo, said after the meeting that the proposal was deferred and confirmed some nations had raised concerns, although he did not go into detail. “The security of the Pacific is the responsibility of the Pacific family, of which Australia is a part. And we want to help build a stronger Pacific family.”

“China will release its own position paper on our own positions and propositions and co-operation proposals with Pacific island countries, and going forward we will continue to have ongoing and in-depth discussions and consultations to shape more consensus on co-operation,” he told reporters, who were not allowed to ask questions.
