Her office declined to comment, but in opening remarks to Mr Wang that were made public she told him “Australia’s government has changed but our national interests and our policy settings have not”. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the meeting on the sidelines of the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting was a “first step” in improving ties between Beijing and Canberra after five years of tensions.
Australia-China Relations Institute head James Laurenceson agreed that the read-out showed China was keen to portray its quarrel as one with the Coalition government rather than with Australians more broadly.
