Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says the China-Solomon Islands maritime cooperation agreement will be a “major headache” for whoever wins the May 21 election.
“A report in The Australian this morning revealing this agreement between the Chinese and Solomon Islands governments around the installation of submarine cables, exploring for oil and gas resources and the like,” Mr Clennell told Sky News Australia. “Clearly, whoever wins the election, this will be a major headache, immediate headache together with the cost of living.
“And the China-Solomons issue is likely to be front and centre just three days after the election when the Quad meeting between the US, Indian, Japanese and Australian leaders is held in Tokyo at the time of President Biden’s visit to Japan.”
