China targets Australian winemakers in second investigation | ErykBagshaw
China has launched another investigation into Australian wine, targeting producers over subsidies and accusing the Australian government of giving them an unfair advantage.
The escalation is the fourth dispute between Australia and its largest trading partner this month, as the economic partnership is increasingly tied to the degenerating political relationship between the two countries. China's own wine industry is heavily subsidised, with grants for winemaking and research and development propping up the emerging sector.
The $39 million Murray-Darling Basin Economic Development Program supports communities affected by drought and water recovery. Tony Battaglene, chief executive of Canberra-based industry group Australian Grape and Wine, said he "completely" rejected the claim Australian wine producers were subsidised.
