China has singled out Australia for criticism in its latest attack on the US-led response to its display of military force over Taiwan.
“In the past few years, China-Australia relations have experienced serious difficulties for reasons caused by the Australian side.”The PLA sealed off six large areas around Taiwan for four days.On Tuesday, Defence Minister Richard Marles said both sides needed to show restraint. “What we need to see now is a return to calm. That is what everyone in the region wants,” he told ABC radio.
“We don’t want to see any changes to the unilateral status quo in the Taiwan Strait,” Mr Marles said. While China has previously signalled it hoped to improve bilateral relations under the Labor government, last week’s visit to Taiwan by Ms Pelosi has revived old tensions between Canberra and Beijing. It came as China’s imports from Australia fell 11.1 per cent to $US85 billion in the first seven months of the year compared with the year-earlier period, Australian Bureau of Statistics data showed.
China wants to wean itself of its dependence on Australian iron ore but has struggled to do so even as diplomatic relations sourced. However, it has stopped buying Australian coal. “Australia has remained in lockstep with Washington’s stance on US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s provocative trip to the island of Taiwan, though with some restraint,” Yu Lei, chief research fellow at the research centre for Pacific island countries at China’s Liaocheng University told theChina announcedis the North Asia correspondent for The Australian Financial Review. He is based in Tokyo.
