While the Chinese government has reported only about 40 deaths, other evidence suggests packed crematorium freezers and incinerators running around-the-clock.

The Chinese government says COVID-19 has killed only about 40 people since Dec. 7, when the country of 1.4 billion people abandoned its “zero covid” strategy. But it creates a problematic situation for the Chinese government, with critics saying the former, ultra-strict approach prevented widespread immunity against COVID-19, setting China up for a deadly outbreak three years after the start of the pandemic, and when the COVID-19 threat in most countries has fallen to a level similar to the flu.

Officially, about 5,200 people in China had died of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, according to The Washington Post. For comparison, the United States, with 330 million people and less than a quarter of the population of China, has recorded about 1.1 million COVID-19 deaths since the start of the pandemic.— far below the peak seven-day average of about 3,350 in January, 2021.
