Liberal Senator James Paterson says data on the popular social media app TikTok can be accessed by Beijing even when parent company ByteDance claims it is securely stored.

Mr Paterson said a leak to BuzzFeed by a TikTok whistleblower showed while the app claimed users from Australia, United States, and the United Kingdom would have their data stored securely in America and Singapore, this was not the case.

“We learned that it was accessed and had been repeatedly accessed in mainland China,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin. “What has become even more worrying is to find out not just our data is accessible in China but how much they are collecting through the app.” Mr Paterson said a report revealed China was collecting users’ locations, whole contact books, hard drive contents, photos, videos, and calendars.

“A whole lot of things, even including our history of Wi-Fi logins, which are not necessary for the functioning of the app and you have to really question why they’d be collecting that,” he said.
