A Chinese media outlet says Australia overreacted to fears Beijing was preparing to extend trade sanctions on meat products.
, which is notoriously critical of Australia and other countries that criticise China, said shipments of meat from Australia were being cleared as normal and that the issue had been hyped up.
“The irrational attention and hype over mere hearsay is reflective of the lingering market anxiety about China-Australia economic and trade relationship, which has been under the shadow of the political tension between the two countries for some time.” A Chinese social media report which said China was suspending imports of Australian and New Zealand grain, dairy and other agricultural products triggered widespread alarm among companies exporting to China earlier this week. The Australian and New Zealand embassies held talks with China Customs, which later clarified there was no suspension. The report was later amended but not until widespread panic has spread through the agriculture industry in Australia and New Zealand.
