Six Chinese men were found stranded in Kupang, Indonesia after their boat engine malfunctioned. They are suspected of being part of a people smuggling operation aiming to reach Australia.
A clearing in mangroves on the coast of Kupang, where a group of six Chinese men wandered ashore looking for accommodation. A rideshare driver in Kupang, West Timor, found them on the side of the road. They were wet up to their waist, carrying a backpack each, and spoke no Indonesia n. They said they had difficulty with their boat engine and asked for directions to a nearby hotel. Paul, a former people smuggler from Rote Island, called the police.
He recalled that he used to bring people like this flown into Bali on tourist visas and travelled to South Sulawesi, allegedly to meet people smugglers who would take them by boat to Australia, a few hundred miles away. But not far from Kupang the boat ran into trouble, a court would later hear. The passengers were dropped off and they waded ashore, then made their way through a coastal village to the main road where they met Paul. In May six Chinese men were dropped in the mangroves on the coast of Kupang. They waded ashore and made their way through a small village, before asking directions to a nearby hotel. The men allegedly hoped to continue to Australia on a people smuggling boat, to find work. They are not the only Chinese people to have passed through this small city in remote Indonesia, suspected of looking for a fisherman to take them across the sea
