Chinese authorities have successfully rescued a Chinese model, Yang Zeqi, from a human trafficking ring operating in Myanmar 's lawless borderlands. According to a statement released by China's state security ministry on Friday, Yang Zeqi and several other victims were rescued and safely returned to China. The ministry used pseudonyms to refer to the trafficking victims, naming them as Wang Mou, Sun Mouqiang, Yang Mouqi, Wu Mouqi, Lin Mouling, Xu Mouning, and others.

The statement highlighted the ongoing efforts to combat cross-border telecom network fraud, vowing to maintain a 'high-pressure crackdown' on these criminal activities. The rescue of Yang Zeqi comes amidst growing concerns about the rampant human trafficking and exploitation in Myanmar's border regions, particularly after the 2021 coup. The area near Thailand's border has become a notorious hub for industrial-scale scam compounds, exploiting vulnerable individuals with promises of legitimate work before trapping them in virtual slavery.The victims are often forced to participate in online scams, such as 'pig butchering', where scammers build trust with their targets over extended periods before defrauding them of large sums of money. Yang Zeqi's last known contact was eight days prior to his rescue, during a video call with his mother on December 29th. In the call, he appeared to have an injured eye and was dressed in black. He expressed gratitude for his safe return in a video post, urging young people to remain vigilant against internet scams. Last year, a report by the United States Institute of Peace estimated that 305,000 scammers in Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos were responsible for stealing an estimated $US39 billion ($63.4 billion) annually. China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi has emphasized the urgency for Southeast Asian nations to crack down on online gambling and telecom fraud, stating that the prevalence of these activities on the Thai-Myanmar border poses a significant threat to citizens of China and other countries
