CCTV cameras made by a Chinese surveillance giant are operating in government buildings across the country, despite being flagged as a potential security concern by federal agencies.
South Australian Health Minister Stephen Wade said “security and technical issues” arose with the pilot, which led to Care Protect and the government agreeing not to continue with the partnership.
Visitors pass by a booth for state-owned surveillance equipment manufacturer Hikvision at the Security China 2018 expo in Beijing.“The welfare, security and privacy of vulnerable South Australians are our top priorities and the government would never put that at risk,” he said. “Hikvision’s controlling shareholder, for example, is a Chinese government-owned military conglomerate and both companies have internal communist party branches, so these are not private and independent companies.”
NSW Health said its public hospital network was serviced by CCTV from a range of suppliers and manufacturers including Hikvision.
