With the game clock continuing to run after first downs in an effort to speed up games, the Bruins head coach jokes that there are now more media timeouts
Saturday night’s football game between UCLA and Coastal Carolina lasted 3 hours and 36 minutes after to a new rule change by the NCAA.
“I’m gonna talk about the marketing people here and see if we can do some things on TV timeouts,” Kelly said, jokingly. “Because we have a ton of time. So maybe we can make it a little bit more eventful. We could go in the crowd and talk to people for a while and come back and start playing again.” The rule change was intended to speed up the game by forcing teams to maximize each play and make a push to score on each drive, according to the NCAA’s website. UCLA adjusted by effectively running tempo plays against Coastal Carolina.
Although the speed of the game increased, the number of plays by UCLA decreased. The Bruins averaged 71.15 offensive plays in 13 games last season, with a high of 94 plays against Cal and a low of 61 against Utah.“If you watched us in the first half, we weren’t playing slow, we weren’t trying to milk the clock and we ran a lot of tempo in there,” Kelly said.
UCLA coaches and staff also wore “Maui Strong” T-shirts on the sidelines and welcomed the Kapolei High School football team, in town for a game against Calabasas, to the Rose Bowl. Bruins frequently stopped by to greet the players – one even gave out a pair of gloves.
